It’s not always easy to get to that place where you can go heart to hand. It’s the best. What’s left on the canvas is honesty. I relate it to letting down your guard, no facade, like a musician that can somehow get up on stage and miraculously remove the audience. They lay their soul out there and sing or play directly from their heart. It’s gutsy and beautiful.
My daughter (now at St.Lawrence University) recently forwarded a utube link to me. In the subject box, she simply wrote “these guys are awesome!”, no message attached. I sat there spellbound as I watched and listened. The film is not creatively done. It’s shot in front of a bookshelf in someone’s living room so don’t expect the cinematography to blow you away. But there are 3 guys lost for a few minutes, doing something they love. Giving you a slice of their souls, honest and true.

The Greater Portland Regional 50 Exhibit/Danforth Gallery review excerpt:“. . . Juror Alison Ferris admits that many of the submissions were from the traditional, rather than conceptual, mode. Indeed, several of the participants’ works possess that certain mass appeal. However, “works like Laurie Hadlock’s ‘Snow Field,’ ... are vaguely familiar motifs, but with surprisingly unique and unfamiliar styles and approaches. . .” Alison Ferris, former curator, Bowdoin College.
awards
I have received a few awards, but my favorite (that I consider an award) was the day I was carefully packing paintings into my Outback. Ilka, my daughter who was maybe 5 years old at the time, was sitting on the granite steps in front of our woodshed watching intently. When I was nearly done and ready to drive away to deliver them to be shown (and possibly sold), she came dashing towards the car, located a very specific painting and ran into the house and upstairs.
It remains in her bedroom to this day and makes me smile every time I walk by that open door. It is also one of my all time favorites. How did she know?
